|Deebie.. I usually don't winter sow just because of all the things you mentioned. I too lost hundreds of seedlings last year. In fact pots are still sitting in middle of yard where I had to dump them last year. I'm the last person to ask about wintersowing for sure.
We got last evening that rain, frozen sleet mix again last night and they say we gonna get more of it, so I don't think I gonna chance putting anything outside til the weather stabilizes itself if it ever does.
Now when the weather warms up somewhat and we have them almost non stop rains, I have put seed out and let the rains do what I call wintersowing for my area and had things germinate with no problem. Guess constant rain washing the seeds and the cool temps and than sorta high was enough for them to pop.
Maybe the experienced winter sowers will share info and help ya out.
