Poison, thank you for the strawberry recommendation. I am not sure if my plants survived the winter in their window boxes. Many of the crowns looked healthy and seemed to have new roots, but they haven't leafed out yet. I put the healthiest crowns in the new planter and stuck the rest in various pots. I had Allstar and Everbearing plants. They were tasty, but not productive. To be fair, squirrels, chipmunks and neighborhood kids were sampling them also. Now that I have a planter and bird net, I hope to have the berried s all to myself!

Star, how wonderful of you to grow veggies for your neighbors. I have seen pots grouped together in plastic kiddie pools. That would save some water. The diy self watering bucket pots may work - if you can find enough buckets. I think I read about it on this list, but there is a eBucket tutorial and also people repurposing plastic totes as diy self watering planters. Here is a link, but there is an article somewhere - maybe here or at AllThingPlants...

I diapers work to retain moisture, maybe you can use maxi pads. They have all cotton ones. Layers of newspaper may help. I have tons of crumpled newspaper and cardboard!

I have only had luck with lemon cucumbers. They grew on a tomato cage in a pot but did better in the ground. I grew a couple of plants and got enough cukes for summer salads. I have no idea how many plants you would need, star. You have warmer weather and a longer season, cukes would probably be happier at your place than mine.
