|I have a tomato variety I refer to as "Friendship." I got it from my friend Theresa -- nice round red meaty sweet tomato, lovely for canning or eating fresh. For a couple of years, I saved seeds and shared them back with her, so I was calling it Theresa's tomato, and her family was calling it Jill's tomato. I was chatting about this tomato on the tomato forum at DOG and was SO excited when I found what Theresa thought was the original seed packet in her mom's stash! I eagerly reported that I now knew the name of this great tomato whose seed I'd been sharing -- "Pomodoro!!" DrCarolyn gently informed me that "pomodoro" means "tomato" in Italian.
