I often hedge my bet by sowing just some of the seeds in a packet (which is partly how I've ended up with such a stash!). I sowed poppy seeds several years ago around our little fruit trees, but the little plants didn't do well... I think they were actually getting too much sun, as several people said part shade seemed better for them in our area... now those fruit trees are a little bigger, and the crooked willow in the corner is really big, so there's a lot of "light shade" in that area. Joyanna and I danced around out there on groundhogs day, sowing a mix of leftover seeds I'd been keeping in the fridge. I put several handfuls of sand with the seeds to make it easier to toss them around.
