LeBug, the roaster comes on just every now and then and goes off nearly at once to maintain a temp of 80 degrees. However, I would not use a good roaster the way I do my cheap one. Mine is too thin-walled to do a good job cooking food, but it makes a good seed starter and soil sterilizer. Besides keeping in moisture, the lid also keeps cats out!
