|My grandmother had large windows in her house next to Lake Heron in Michigan, and she'd feed the hummers. Wouldn't you know it, one of the silly things flew right into the window, fell to the ground, and was snapped up by one of her large dogs. Well, Grandma had a fit, and punished that poor dog for being a dog.
She beat the dogs to the next hummer that crashed into the window and fell onto the ground. Well, she put that little thing into a deep grave to keep the dogs off of its poor little body, said a prayer, and started considering how to keep more of these accidents from occurring. She went out to the feeding station, wondering how to enjoy the hummers without all these fatalies, and yet another hummer crashed into the window! She shook her head, and went off to get the shovel. As she came back, the hummer (just a moment before deader then a door nail) shook itself off, and zoomed out of there.
The feeder came down, and I don't believe she ever fed the birds again out of guilt of burying that hummer alive. Bless her soul.
