Anyone have a fun and unique family tradition to celebrate birthdays?
A few years I started one. Unfortunately it was a little late in my kids' lives, as one was already off to college and now two are off to college, and all three of my kids have their birthdays during the school year.
But anyway, I have a tree that is up all year. I decorate it according to the season and/or holiday. For the week of a birthday, I've started decorating it to celebrate the birthday person. I have special lights, a birthday cake hat that I use as the 'tree topper,' and photos I've had run off of the birthday boy. (Unfortunately, I'm the only birthday 'girl' in this family and so far no one has seen fit to decorate the tree for me. Typical!) I also put little clumps of curling ribbon thingies that I bought at the stationery store. It looks very festive and even though the kids pretend they don't care about it, I know they do!
I had the photos printed at Shutterfly.com using their birthday 'frames.' I used photos from various ages, basically a lot of my favorites mixed in with just plain photos I could find at the time! (You know how that goes.)
The tree is a lot of fun although it does make me sad to think that they kids are so grown up. I really miss the toddler and little boy stages.

I love it! I've got a couple of grandkid birthdays coming up in the next few months. I am going to try and create a tree for them this way.
I did something similar for Christmas when my sister was in a nursing home. I already had a small desktop tree. She had a hard time putting to voice her communication when visitors from her church would come by. So I took photos of each family member and laminated them. I punched holes in them and hung them on her tree along with festive decorations. She loved that tree! She could see her family any time she wanted to with the tree there.
That was done back in 2005. Man my office sure was clean then! HAHAHAHA
Cute tree! Sometimes I hang Christmas cards on our little tree. I like the wooden base around yours. Your grandkids will love their own birthday trees!
What a fantastic idea. My poor pathetic 30 some year old two foot high Christmas tree usually sits out on the coffee table all year round. I never though about decorating it another way during the rest of the year.
