Dear porkpal they are chosen by H.M. Queen. They in this case do not require any duties at all, as no land is given with the title.
But the now Duke and Duchess have offered their support for the Universities, as Oxford already has Royal patronage!
It is always a gesture by the serving monarch to make the second heir to the throne a Duke!
They did not have to do that in Prince Charles case as he is heir to the throne.
Just tradition and Royal protocol!
I am going over the pub, as they are having a hog roast and a party!
It is free, so why not. I did enough cooking yesterday.
