Create a traffic flow. Make sure there is an easy path to get from your house, across your deck and out into the yard without the need to go around lots of furniture. Also make sure there are paths to other frequently used areas, such as the grill.
Find the sun. Don't face furniture so people will be looking directly into the sun during the peak time you use your deck. If you plan to use your deck most often in the late afternoon, avoid west-facing furniture. If you plan to use your deck for your morning coffee, avoid facing east.
Balance the area. Don't put all of your furniture on one side of the deck or crowd it all into one area. Space it out evenly and utilize the whole area.
