The second popular myth (see previous article for the first) associated with perennials assumes that, once planted, perennials maintain themselves. It may be true that some perennials do only require minimal maintenance, but many others require a lot. In addition, when perennials are placed in large beds in the company of many other perennials, maintenance is complicated and time consuming.

Charlie does a good job, and is quite knowledgeable. I am pleased he has decided to share his knowledge with the rest of us. I anticipate many more good articles, so keep watching.

I'd also be the first to say I'm still learning about perennial gardening myself. Some of the most valuable knowledge is "hands-on", which is why it's so interesting to hear other gardeners comment on their own experiences with perennials.
The best article I have ever read about perennial flowers they are what grows mostly in my garden though I seem to have a never ending problems with that awful lily bug, no matter what I do to get rid of them they come back year after year.

Sorry to hear about the lily beetles. Apparently, their first U.S. official sighting was in summer 1992, in Cambridge, Mass. I had quite a few true lilies and used hand picking and neem oil on the larva, for a while, and then gave up. Best hope for environmentally conscious control is the introduction of parasitic insects (which has already begun).
Guess I have to be happy from now on only with my day lilies but I do hope something in the future will help to get rid of that bug, I don't even know how it got to this Massachusetts, I have also heard it is slowly moving west.

Been cold here for last few days, but going to be good gardening weather next week. Likely the last real chance to get things done in the garden, before spring.
This cubit is so we can share gardening tips, tricks, ideas, and methods, and talk about what works and does not work. Of course, what works for one person may not work for another, so let’s share why methods may or may not work, as well.
