I did the same thing Dorothy, tried to grow them in a large container and not enough water. Always seem to find out after the fact. Well, this spring they will be in the ground, lots of room if that is possible here, and lots of water.

Charleen I hear your snake gourds growing right now. All my weeds are like that, no water doesn't phase them.

Say hi to Charley, I've been ignoring him lately. Sad

Shame on you. I'll give him a pear and he will be fine.
they sure are growing now but those snakes sure were slow to start out.

I planted some gourds in old tires...on the ground...and they did fine...I used the tires as berms as the monsoon rains would wash down and the tires acted as buffers. Jo

Our library doesn't have the books on gourds I want in their system. But, got an e-mail from my sister and she is so happy that sister in Minnesota sent her a couple gourd books, one by Ginger Summit and another on decorating. She isn't a procrastinator, like me, so she will be busy with gourds now. Anxious to see some of her work, looking forward to one for Christmas. Hilarious!

Good Idea on the tires. I want some of those narrow lo-rider tires for planters. Have you seen those. Can put in more dirt and have less rubber.

Narrow to-rider tires? never heard of them, but then I don't pay much attention to tires. Hilarious! I'll ask DH about them.

LO-Rider tires, very narrow tires some of these kids put on big cars that hang Low. Ask Him, I bet he will know. You should have them in California. Looks like they have 23" rims with only 2'' of rubber around them.
Here you go-I looked them up, this is what kind of tire I want. Don't look at the price. I want an old already used

Those tires sound interesting... have you seen the swings they make with them also? I never heard of low rider tires, will be on the look out now.

Hip-Hop kids drive them mostly. They put them on those Caprice cars down here. Sometimes the tires cost more than the cars when they get finished dressing them up. I bet you will know when you see one.

OK now that I know what these tires look like I'll have to ask around. Have a lot of gourd sites to look up so I'll be busy for a while and keep myself out of trouble.

Hi! I was so happy to find this cubit! I just grew gourds this year for the first time...Birdhouse. And was amazed by how easy and prolific they were. Just reading through the posts on the cubit has been so helpful and I have learned alot from all of you. Thanks!!!

Thank you, Dorothy! The vines of the gourds grew up a small tree and gourds were hanging from it like Christmas ornaments!
Thanks, Charleen. Your flower is so huge and very pretty!

Don't you just love them. I have snake gourds and once I started watering , upon the advice of the girls here, they took off and haven't stopped yet. Getting close to picking time I think. some are turning sort of white. Are they getting ripe Girls???/ Can I snipe them off and hang them up?

Have the stems shrivelled and dried? If not I would just leave them to dry in the field. Atleast until winter sets in. JMHO others harvest them green.

If you are new to gourds you should know that most "gourders" say to leave at least 2" stems on...in case you need them when they are decorated. Jo

Thanks, Jo! I just harvested about 18 Birdhouse gourds and left some stems. I was leaving them to dry on the deck.. Is that ok? How long does it take to dry?

I leave the stems long so I can hang them up to dry. Seeds will be ready in Spring, right??Too early to harvest anything now.

They need to be stored where it is dry, but air can circulate through them...I happen to like the mold on a gourd...especially if I am going to do it in a natural color...it gives it character...like burls in wood. If you plan to paint them after they are cleaned then the mold spots won't matter.

Good lujck...and lets see pictures....My "Gourmet Gourders Group meets tomorrow. Jo
