We meet at one lady's house ...except in summer...we bring a dish and, some of us, brings a gourd that we are working on...we bring a covered dish to share...thus we are "gourmet'"...we mostly talk, eat, show a finished gourd..if we have done one recently. we mostly enjoy each others company. I have a new friend to bring and the rest of the club will enjoy meeting someone new.

Two of our members are really good...and do the gourd show in Feb...or Arts In The Park.
Here is a picture of our group taken in Feb.

Wish we had something like that around here....but the ladies who do arts & crafts around here are not interested in joining a community gathering...it has been tried and failed twice in the last 5 years Sad

I picked up a book at the library last week called "Glorious Gourd Decorating" by Mickey Baskett. I had never seen so many beautiful things made from gourds. The decorating so beautiful. I have to ask my sister again to send me some pictures of the gourds she has made. She is so into this new hobby of hers. Hoping I get one for Christmas. Rolling my eyes.

I have a sister living in Fallbrook and she discovered Welburn Gourd Farm a few months ago, took some classes and is now in the gourd decorating hobby. It is another project that beckons me, but I have so many others I want to do. Not an expense I can afford either. I'm planning on growing some, just for fun and if I get any good ones I'll give them to her to play with. She is a pretty good artist, but she won't admit it.

Drat! I forgot to take my camera today and one gal brought in a lovely piece she had done...she had taken gift wrapping paper and decoupodged it all over the gourd...then added some beads...very pretty.

Lunch was also great....We had lasgana (sp) and a great dessert called Apple Pie Squares....her combinaation of spices in the apples were so close to what my Mom's tasted like that it brought back good memories. We had 3 new ladies join us today. Jo

I think I saw some folks leave the gourds to cure in the fields all winter. Do most pick them and dry them elsewhere? Which is best? Thanks!

The ones I acquire from my gourd lady are harvested as the stem shrivels and set out on slatted trays to completely dry through the fall and winter....she has the children turn them a couple of times so there are no soft sides.....she also sells some green..if I buy any of these I set them out on pallets and keep on eye on them as they dry....if the rain keeps things too wet I bring them onto the patio.

I find that growers use a variety of ways to cure the gourds...so can't say one way is any better than another.

It is probably best to get them out of the field. I left two on a picnic table and it rained, then they both cracked with the new moisture and drying again.. It is hard to figure out how to dry them without them cracking. I should have put them in the shade under the eaves where they did not get any water at all. The older ones from years ago also cracked out in the sun and rain. Lesson learned here. I have to be more careful with them in the future if I get some going again.

I just stopped by and will be exploring this great site. I have had an interest in gourds for awhile but haven't done much with them so far. I have tried to grow some gourds but only ended up with a few as the Squash Bugs have been terriable the last few years. I have two small ones upstairs just waiting to be decorated one a small bird house gourd and the other an egg gourd. Looks like I have found a great site for growing, cleaning and decorating instructions and ideas.

Thanks for the welcome.
I was on vacation in N.C. and found some very beautiful gourd crafts in an upscale shop. I noticed the tag on it made at Medowbrooke Farms in Carlise Pa. Less than an hours drive from my home. I have been wanting to get up there but still haven't made it.

They do have a festival in the fall and I have wanted to go but never seem to make it. We travel a lot in the fall and I am always so busy trying to get the garden to bed and the house plants inside between trips.
Here is their web site might give you some new ideas.
