I jave some snake gourd seeds and have been worrying about them not getting enough rain. there is nothing like heavenly rain to make things grow. well water will keep them alive but natural rain helps them grow. We are getting rain now and I am so happy. We will hope they have a growing surge. got them on a fence. I'm too impatient.
all those ions and Electical charges and stuff we don't even know about.
Like everything always smells clean and fresh after a rain. I love it, don't yo??
I love the rain...AND WE JUST HAD OUR FIRST REAL ONE. Monsoon ffinally came to my yard....Praise the Lord. Yes...gourds take lots of water,,until fall. Jo
Rain?? Haven't had any here for so long, I would love it if we would have summer showers. DH ran a water line to the back fence so now I don't have to drag that darn hose all over, but I still would love rain instead.
Hello everyone - this is my first year to grow gourds. I have leared quickly that I didn't allow enough room for them - wow, they get really big!!
Somewhere on here I read about male and female flowers - can someone explain that to me please? I have tons and tons of blooms but only one gourd that I have found so far. I am clueless so any help would be much appreciated.
Hi RRM - I am following you, do you feel stalked?
Where have you been??? Stalk away my friend. We are finally getting rain so maybe my snake gourd will do it's thing. I'm still hoping and Used some Charley tea on it too. It is taking off, finally.
I have the biggest mess of gourds and blooms - but only one gourd forming - what am I doing wrong? I think it is a little birdhouse gourd, I will take a pic afterwhile.
All the male ...and female...blooms will have their own seperate vine...the female blooms will have a small bulb type bulge behind the bloom...If I were you I would try hand pollinating the male and female blooms....Gourds are pollinated by a certain night moth...not the bees. Some times nature just need a helping hand. Do it early in the morning. PS Welcome to the Gourd Cubit. J
Yea, I see see her out there with her little paint brush in hand and fussing. Do it!!Lori. That is a strange way to grow, isn't it?
Are the blooms more open in the morning? Jo??
Hey - if I have to stand out there naked and dance at 6 a.m. to have gourds, I will do it! I must have a lot of boy vines - but I have some bulby things too. How do I pollinate? Not in the nude I hope - do I have to do male to female?
Thanks for the welcome - you may kick me out - I know nothing!!! I need lots of help - heck it took me all spring to even get my plants to come up - I am kinda surprised they did, I put them through a lot getting here.
Just need to bump this up because I'm really beginning to want gourds growing in my yard. I just heard from my sister who is taking classes in decorating gourds. I never saw so many gourds when I went on site http://www.welburngourdfarm.com. She doesn't live too far from this farm and she is so excited about trying this. She should do well at this, she does well at everything she tries. Just take a look at this for inspriation. She said her friend bought a lamp with shade made out of a giant gourd for $135. I'd love to see a picture of it, must be beautiful. Now, I'm getting excited!!
endicandles, I could picture you at 6am dancing..lol last year, I almost did that.. Every week I was there with a cup of fertilizer and watered everyday. I measured them everyday too.. Welcome..
Sami, I know what you mean, welburns is something, they have classes during their festival, you can even sign up on-line.. Of course, they have good food too..lol, I must be hungry..
Ridesredmule, it is a neat place, they have those videos on their website, or they had a link to them. I have not been there in a while. They also have a store on site where they sell gourd decorating supplies.
It was wonderful. Oh, gourd, my gourds are growing they look more like clubs than snakes. Something happen, I need to put a girdle on them. Must be the Charley Tea.
I didn't get to look at all what that link offered, I think I might need a catalog. Will get back to it, I think that is where my sis is taking lessons. And she was wondering what she was going to do with all her free time after she retired. Says she is busier now than when she was working. A whole different world for her.
