I hoping some day in the near future to go and visit this farm. I'd love to see all the gourds growing. It is about an hour's drive from me, but good excuse to visit my sister too. That is if I can ever catch her home now that she is caught up with her new hobby. She said San Diego is the perfect climate for growing them. She sent some information and hope I can copy and paste it here for you. She did come into this forum to check it out. It worked!! This is what she wrote...............

I did notice that people were asking about cleaning gourds, so you may want to tell them the way the instructor at the last class recommended. She has been doing this for 15 years, so she should know what she is talking about. Soak the gourds for 20-30 minutes. Cover w/ a wet cloth, as they are hollow and want to float. Scrub w/ a steel wool mesh pad, available at WalMart and other places. Rinse & dry. The brown gunk on the outside is mold, so wearing a mask is recommended. It's very important to wear mask when cutting them and cleaning the membrane & seeds out. The dust gets in your nose & eyes, so safety goggles are also important. I cut & cleaned an 9" gourd in class... cough, cough, cough. From now on I'll wear a mask.

I like those gourds, just wish they gave them a different name. I cringe when I hear "snake". I don't plan on doing any craft work with gourds, just have to try growing them. Materials are just too expensive for me to start a new hobby. If and when I do have good luck with them I guess I'll save them for my sister and hope she makes me some neat things.

When you say "steel wool mesh" I think you means the metal mesh scrubbers...like the brass Chore Girl...at least that is what most of us use. The mold on a gourd is very easy to clean..as it has already eaten the thin outer shell...and that is what is hard to remove. Jo

This is a half of a SnakeGourd... I made a 2 story bird house condo out of it...I used the top of an old coach light for the roof. A piece of styrofoam was pressed inside to divide the 2 apartments. The entrances are on opposite sides of the gourd. Jo

I knew someone would have used the snake gourd. Cute little house you made Jo. Starting to locate the spot to grow some as soon as spring arrives. When my sister begins a project she always finishes it, not anything like me. Can't wait to see if the library carries a book on gourds. Of course, I have some books to finish reading to take back. I think I could spend an entire day in that library.

Our library has them....check out "Gourds in your Garden" by Ginger Smitt...I think that is her last name...also books by Bonnie Gibson.....she lives in Tucson but does shows and classes all over the USA. Jo

Well thanks, Jo. Put that on my list for books to look for. If they don't have them I think I can request them. You do seem to keep yourself busy.

Crossed out Smitt and put Summit on my list. They have cut back library days so better check and make sure what days are open. Trying to save a little money that way, don't think Ca. will ever balance their budget.

Found my apple gourd seeds so better get a box together for spring planting.

Now I know why my gourds did not grow for me....1) Not enough room. You can't grow gourds in a container...I tried growing them in the center of tires.....and 2) not enough water.

Next year I am going to cut down the number of gourds and set them up with a watering system and plant them in the ground. Hopefully that will give me healthy gourds for my projects.
