Do you remove the old nests every year?

Yes I clean out the nests each year and check to see that the gourds are ready for the next tenant..sometimes if they are hung back in the same spot the same family will move in. If I miss a nest I have noticed that the bird cleans out the old nest material and brings in new material....they are quite the little house keepers. Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

Hilarious! How do you take out the old nest? through the hole the birds use?

yes. I find that using tongs helps a bit for the larger holes and for the smaller holes I use one of the cleaning tools to help remove the old nest.

Great article! Especially loved the part about wearing a mask for cleaning them. Didn't realize that they presented a potential health hazard when trying to clean them.

Have you by chance ever tried to decoupage one instead of painting it?

Now Starlight to answer your question better...

Marti decoupaged a few. One was with material and it looked like a crazy patch...she gave it as a wedding gift to a friend of ours for her garden...

She found seasonal and party napkins with colors and flowers and used them to decoupage others....Once I get things ready to begin decorating gourds that I have here, I will probably decoupage some and paint others then post them to our store...Right now the store is sparse because Marti and I had to hold off painting and decorating gourds to get her ready to move back to Calif. I had three gourds, I cleaned yesterday. Wow!! Talk about work!!! Put bleach and dishsoap into my mop bucket. Added the gourd and it Floated!!! Dog gone, I got to get it to be covered with water!!! I finally got a steppingstone to hold it down. But it sure didn't want to be sunk!!!!
But I got them Finished. Here they are...

they are beautiful. I could think of several things to do with each one. One I might just give a light wood type stain....by doing so it will enhance the natural look of the gourd. Another I might try my hand at decoupage.....perhaps with flowers and greenery of the season, and the last one .....well you get the idea....you are only limited by your imagination...Let it Fly Girl Smiling Smiling Smiling
