Thanks for an informative article. I did not do any outside cleaning for my birdhouse gourds, just inside. I figured I could just grow more easily enough if they fall apart, although they could be fun to paint or decorate as presents. I may have to try the copper scrubber for the bushel gourds, depending on what I do with them. They are so big, I may also opt for a drill with a large wire brush. I used the tiny spinning top gourds to make snowmen out of, and those took a long time to clean mostly because I had so many.

The popularity of this article surprised me, but several bird websites and some woodworking sites posted links to it, so I must have done something OK with this one. Those that are interested in birdhouses may find it helpful.
