Yes...critters will get them...especially (in our area) JAVALINAS!! They will eat anything that gets in their way. I have seen where they have eaten the INSIDES of a Prickley Pear Cactus with out touching the out side. Looks like a pouch when they get through.

Birds and rabbits will eat the newly grown leaves too.

JO, is that like Wild HOgs??? Maybe you could grow the gourds up a tree or over a building.
I have some snake gourd seed and Birdhouse gourd seed and Lords knows what else I have around here...
