Yes...critters will get them...especially (in our area) JAVALINAS!! They will eat anything that gets in their way. I have seen where they have eaten the INSIDES of a Prickley Pear Cactus with out touching the out side. Looks like a pouch when they get through.

Birds and rabbits will eat the newly grown leaves too.
