Hey, Chelle -- If you come across this, I was just wondering if you came up through Wisconsin to get to the UP, or if you went across the Mackinac bridge? I really love crossing the bridge, but have known many people who wouldn't drive across it -- it's really quite an engineering marvel and was featured on the show Dirty Jobs a year or so ago (because of the constant painting and manitenance that takes place).

Anyone else is welcome to jump in here about the UP -- just moving a discussion over from the "introductions" forum.

Yes Sandy! We did take the bridge. Magnificent going across it, wonderful viewed from a ferry boat as well. Especially at night when all the lights make it so pretty!
I hardly ever watch any television, just not my thing but DH watches Dirty Jobs and he called my attention to that episode so I did get to see it!
It seems similar to the George Washington Bridge in that way. From what they say it is always being painted. As soon as they get to one end, they have to start again at the other. LOL Nuthin' like job security eh? (Uhhmm, is slang allowed here? lol) I'll try to restrain myself, but sometimes it seems to get the point across better.
Hope you have a great day if I don't make it back over again. Work, work, work!

Ooooo.. I think I have a photo handy of the Bluffs on Mackinac Island, not of the bridge though.
My mom had to take her dogs along last year. There is a dust mop in the baby buggy. Shiatsu
dog. I don't think that is the right spelling, but it looks better than what I was going to write!lol

Chelle, "eh" is Yooper slang, so of course it's allowed here. Usually prefaced with "yah," as in "Say yah to da UP, eh?" LOL, I'm originally from lower Mich. but have been here so long I'm an honorary Yooper.

We got stopped right on the very top of the bridge one time due to the painting -- on the middle section that is open grates, if you remember that -- and had a great view on a beautiful sunshiny day, with an ore boat coming down the straits and going under the bridge. Another time when we went to Mackinac Island we met some people (in a bar) that had jet-skied (sp?) across the straits -- now *that* is crazy, in my mind!

No crazier than islanders ski-mobiling across the straights in the winter! Hear tell they line a path with used Chrismas trees so that nobody gets lost out on the ice!

True, so true! That's why I own a four wheel drive truck. The road leading to our house is actually lower than the land on either side, so when the wind is strong from the east or west, we can have snowdrifts 6 ft. deep!

Hi , still wondering around this vast universe of cubits.
Nice place you have here.
I have been to and through the UP many times. It is a beautiful place.
We lived in Michigan for 18 years, spent many vacations exploring the UP .
My Grandparents had a cabin in Ely MN and driving through the UP was the quickest route.
Beautiful country, good to here there is still some unspoiled (green) places around.

Hi Gardengus -- welcome to GreenSpace! I'm afraid it's still in its infancy but hope to have lots more of interest soon... Please feel free to jump in anywhere and let us know what you are interested in. It's so nice to hear from people who have actually heard of the UP (but on the other hand we kind of like keeping it a secret in many ways, too... Smiling ) I hope we'll be "seeing" lots of you here and around the rest of cubitville -- it's a little chaotic out there right now but I think things will eventually settle in; so much to explore, so little time!

It was so good to see you post today, Sandy!

I was wondering where you were, and hoping everything was okay.

How's the weather up there in the UP? The sun is shining here, but it's only in the thirties.....a little breezy, but not too bad. I've been out looking at sprouting bulbs and such, and some plants putting on leaves. Blinking Seems a bit early for that, but maybe the plants know more than I do! Hilarious!

No need to worry, Chelle - this winter has just been oddly crazy with work and family responsibilities; I'll be on regularly again soon, I promise!

Definitely not spring here yet, but it should be right around the corner - my onion seeds have sprouted under the lights, so that gives me hope!
