It's fascinating to exchange gardening experiences with people whose seasons are back-to-front, but sometimes I want to know what others are doing in gardens that share the seasons with my own. If you garden somewhere south of the equator, please introduce yourself here. We'll stick with one forum until we get busy, so share news, photos and whatever you like. When we see what we have lots of, we'll expand a little. As for me, I have decided to work less and garden more. I am rescuing a very overgrown garden, and I have planted quite a lot of Dahlias this summer, as I have never had many autumn flowers. Roses, which endure all kinds of neglect, have been the backbone of my garden over the last few years. It's a tiny place, but I have also shoe-horned in some bantam chickens, a flowering cherry, some irises, a few vegetables, and some berry fruit. The lawn is shrinking, and in danger of complete demolition. I have territorial ambitions regarding patches of my friends' gardens. They seem to be coping! When I'm not in the garden, I'm teaching, mostly online. My photos are licensed CC BY (Attribution). More Dahlia photos here. Is anyone going to the Ellerslie Flower Show in March? It's New Zealand's largest gardening event, and will be held in Christchurch this year: http://www.ccc.govt.nz/thecouncil/newsmedia/mediareleases/20... My photos are licensed CC BY (Attribution). Still in New Zealand, but further north, there's an open day at Dahlia Haven this weekend: http://www.dahliahaven.co.nz/ My photos are licensed CC BY (Attribution). More Dahlia photos here. I've just launched the #GrowSouth hashtag on Twitter, as there doesn't seem to be another hashtag for Southern Hemisphere gardeners there. If you haven't found other gardeners on Twitter, also try #GardenChat, #RoseChat, #GardenWalk, #LandscapeChat, #FlowerChat, and #gardening. My photos are licensed CC BY (Attribution). I'm only a little bit south of the equator, but still south, so I guess that counts me in. Although, my gardening experiences may differ to a lot of others. Needless to say, I like tropicals. I'd like to work less and garden more, but I have a rather large bank manager and his extended family to support. ![]() ![]() |

Welcome Zig! I love your flower - is it a Bauhinia? I lived in Tonga when I was a child, and there were lots in Vava'u. Beautiful! My photos are licensed CC BY (Attribution). More Dahlia photos here. Thanks Mary. No, it's a Poinciana. But they'd be over in Tonga as well I'm sure. |

Everything is being blown to bits in the garden today, and the winds look set to stay for about a week. However, a Hippeastrum in a pot is flowering beautifully, whatever else is falling apart. There is always something to enjoy and be thankful for :)![]() It's probably Hippeastrum 'Snow White', because that's what it said on the bag, but as my other white one was actually red when it flowered, I'm taking all the labels with a grain of salt now. ![]() My photos are licensed CC BY (Attribution).
