I am going to make an ornament first. that is what I started out with. My pins are made with Polymer clay. I use Sculpy III I love using poly clay. It is very nice to blend all that clay into a soft flexible medium to create my pins and ornaments. Clay is very forgiving if you make something wrong, you can roll it back into a ball and make something else. My favorite helper is the Pasta machine used to condition or blend the clay. We need a pattern of what we want to make. So who else is better for me than my Darlin Charley.
Thumb of 2011-04-02/Ridesredmule/c96c7e I have this print under a piece of glass, you can use this method or the other shown.
Thumb of 2011-04-02/Ridesredmule/358904 A cardboard or index card pattern of what you want.
Polymer clay comes in a world of wonderful colors or you can blend your own. There is the most common, which is, rolling and forming the clay in your hands until it is ready to be flattened into a piece large enough for your pattern.

I had a lot of orange so ,we are making two. One with a pattern and the other is a freeform type on top of the glass. I use an X-acto knife to trim out my Charley.
Thumb of 2011-04-02/Ridesredmule/2f4851
Then I can draw in the details with a toothpick or my favorite tool is a bead reamer. You can use what you have on hand but do not re use it for food use. If you use a knife from the kitchen keep that knife with your clay and use it for that only. Clay is non-toxic but it is better to keep all your clay tools with the clay in a box.
Thumb of 2011-04-02/Ridesredmule/192043
Keep your clay area clean so you won't get the colors all merged into a rainbow, unless of coarse you want a Rainbow.. I love different colors and I flatted the clay into flat pieces , lay them on top of glass on pattern and trim the shape I want.
Thumb of 2011-04-02/Ridesredmule/01271f the next picture shows a roll I made to shape for eyes. Start out simple Get a couple of good Polymer clay books and they will explain how to make the rolls. Once you start working with clay you will want to make and learn more.

I flip them over and sign and date my creation(whenever I remember) Thumb of 2011-04-02/Ridesredmule/e77dba Then into the oven they go @ 275 degrees for 20 minutes for each 1/4 ''. It wouldn't hurt to let these go for 30 min. If you have any questions, just ask...

Wow, this looks like something I may enjoy doing. Thanks so much for sharing, I had no idea. Interesting that you use a pasta machine, think I could do the same using my rolling pin between waxed paper like I do my pie dough?
As for the oven baking, do you just use your oven? No special oven for firing?
That Charlie is adorable with the hummingbird and flower, you have quite the imagination! I tip my hat to you.

You would do good to use a rolling pin you Won't use again. Some folks uses a wooden dowel, You just don't want the clay to get on your utensil. I'll make you a better list or find you a link. How about that? No special oven and Different clays uses different temperatures the package will tell you the correct temp...

I made this little lady for Mekos. Thumb of 2011-04-06/Ridesredmule/557e02
She only had one hand in picture, no shoulders, so I added them, after i did Mekos loved it. Of coarse, I had to make her a handbag to go with that purple outfit...

Questions as we are heading into the winter months of inside projects.
What do you "bake" them on in the oven? Foil, or a cookie sheet or just on the oven racks?
I take it you paint before you bake?
What paints do you use? I have acrylics, will they work?
Is there a spray finish to use to give them a glossy shine when cooked?
Thanks

i have a cookie sheet I use for Only my clay arts.
I use colored clay so there is no painting. I use temperature of 275 degrees for each 1/4 inch of clay.
Yes acrylics will work. I use Krylon glossy clear spray. Thumb of 2011-09-22/Ridesredmule/8ed59e

They are spectacular!! I love them and especially the flower brooch! I am thinking of making plant hangers (I mean the things you stick in the pot with the plant"). I see you make your own sticks for them. I was thinking of hanging them from a coat hanger wire? Any thoughts?

The turtles up there are plant hangers. I keep a clay pot in my room to make the arms right.
A coathanger would work, I also use wooden stakes and wrap them in clay, top to bottom. NO wood exposed to draw moisture. Popsycle Sticks but you have to make your critter small to go on the end. Thumb of 2011-09-23/Ridesredmule/083f71
You get better every time you work with clay. I made a flat strip of clay, very thin, then start at one end of stick and wrap and flatten clay hard against the stick. The hummer is on a bambo stick or skewer, I wrapped it in clay...

I am also curious as to where you get your clay. I went to a local craft store and it is $2.50 for a tiny 1 1/2" sq. by 1/2" block?

I get mine at Michaels. Love JoAnn's but it is higher for some reason. I do buy the larger packs of white, black, terracotta. You can make up your own colors too if you wish. I have a clay(pasta) machine and I love using it to condition my clays. It will keep you busy, that's for sure. No Idle hands here too much unless I just don't want to do something.

I went to Michaels, but didn't see any blocks or large packs. Is Sculpey a good clay to use?

Yes, but I use SculpyIII or premo is great too. Sometimes the storebrand works good. You have to play around and see which you like best. I have some clay that is very dry, I usually mix it with a softer clay and make it more blended. I like the translucent but it really is a stiff clay. It is a learn as you go. You can buy a liquid sculpy glue, also a moisturizer for the clay. It is a constantly learning and doing .
