I like all the paint mediums although I find oils (which I apply too thick too soon) give a great effect that is all I find them good for as in that mink stole in the gallery. Piling only works with oils and it is fab, but not with acrylics. Acrylics I kinda wash sometimes to show the grain of the wood, I don't like the hard fast true colors on a lot of wood, it might as well be a cartoon painted in a book, just not real. Have you ever painted rocks? Been there done that, not for me although I have more than plenty. BTW have you entered the Travel Junction contest - haven't seen any entries?
