Hoping someone can shed some light on my problem...or maybe some advise or help? I've had this H. villosa for almost 4 years now. Started out as a 3 leaf cutting...grew pretty well and about maybe 2 years or so later several peduncles started forming every where, I have a little over a dozen peduncles on the plant now...but non has ever produced any buds! Grumbling I can't figure out why? It gets some morning sun and bright light in the afternoon. Its outside at least 350+ days a year and I only bring it inside when frost/freeze is in the forecast...yet NO blooms ever develop on any of the peduncles. I also fertilize it on a regular basis with a weak solution...

Any help or advise is appreciated...Thanks!!

Hi Nancy,

I don't have villosa - but I do grow globulosa. I know they are very similar, and are often mistaken for each other.

My experience with globulosa...I grew mine for a good 5 years before discovering it needed warm humid summers and cool dry winters. I literally dessicate mine over winter - only watering when I think it's going to die!

...from last summer and autumn:

Interesting...I thought it needed cool temps year round...I haven't been able to grow either. I would look to where it comes from...altitude and what the winter is (wet or dry).....

You are probably quite right Carol - cool temps year round. It depends on where you live I suppose. We had the most awful summer last year, cool, wet and humid. Temps hit 80degrees for about 2 days and that was it. My plant was kept in a room overnight that was unheated (during winter) so it would have had temps of 50 degrees or less for a while.
My idea of warm and humid is very different to yours Rolling on the floor laughing

Rolling on the floor laughing Too right, Julie. Semantics get us everytime!!! The only 'cool' lover I can grow is H. carnosa...and I think that hoya would grow ANYwhere (and it does).

Thanks Julie and Carol for you insights Smiling ...this hoya has me completely baffled Shrug! ...we'll see what happens down the road. Maybe flowers just aren't in my future for this hoya. Its sad since its already produced all those peduncles...its done half the job, now all it has to do is "grow" buds,lol...apparently, I'm asking for too much from this plant...

Hang in there, Nancy....you've had tremendous success in blooming tons of hoyas; and I'm sure it's simply a matter of time before H. villosa will be blooming for you...as everything else has bloomed for you! I'm glad that you started this thread...I've learned quite a bit about villosa/globulosa from reading the responses. Fondly, Patrick

I might add that my large plant is in a very small pot for it's size. (I got fed up with it and didn't repot it!)
I have no idea whether being rootbound helped it to flower or not Shrug!
good luck!

Thanks Patrick, unfortunately I have a long list of hoyas that are very stubborn and stingy when it comes to blooming...guess we can't have it all. But, I'm certainly not giving up...

Julie, I meant to comment on your beautiful globulosa blooms...Very pretty!! You've certainly had much better luck than I have, congrats Hurray!

Potting UP is so tempting!!!!! ....and that's when I find they grow the best as long as the water gets thru the root ball. Whistling
