I've heard, from the Ensata boys, that there's a place in SC with wonderful JIs.

But I want to buy some. Anyone know if there are any specific ones that grow better in the south?

My first JI order to Aitkens, after 4 years I only have 2 of 7 surviving. don't like those odds. Any information that can up those odds a bit would help.

Buy them in the fall, and get the largest divisions sold. Mulch well. Water right up until they die down.

I really don't think the cultivar matters as much as how you care for the irises. Any Japanese should do well in the south down to nothern Florida.

Certainly Tony does well with the unregistered ones he sells.

yeah, but I've never seen them blooming - never been around then, though. always too busy at home. I don't even know exactly where they are growing. havent' seen them around. they tend to use me in the test beds, though, weeding, mulching etc.

Well, you need to take a trip through when they are in bloom then.

Pamela Harper grows them well and she is 8b coastal Virginia. I'm sure they will do well for you with the above instructions. You need to keep them watered though.

got a pod off of one of Terry's last year. wish I could find the map that shows where I planted what, so I knew the name of the pod parent

- that room WAS my office, turned guestroom, then turned junk room.. somewhere in there....
