Thanks for sharing, Jon. It looks like you have gotten away with planting your rhizomes lower than I have mine. Mine are practically laying on top of the ground to avoid rot. I would prefer to have them at least a little lower down just for a better appearance. Don't you love the Miracle Gro potting mix? I've used the large bags of their organic potting mix for several full beds with great results.

I know what you mean. The ones practically on the top get a bit wobbly. Some of my rhizomes have settled down into the ground a bit too much. On occasions I have to scrape away some of the soil with my hands. I've lost some to rot, but have saved a few by quickly removing the rotted part with a knife. I forgot to add that I start all of them in pots and don't plant them in the ground until they seem to be established and growing well.

I mix in Miracle Gro potting mix into all of the soil here. The only type I stay away from is that "Moisture Control" potting mix. That stuff's a nightmare. It holds the water in the soil.

Agreed about the "Moisture Control"... that's one thing I definitely do not need here! I establish mine in pots as well, waiting until cooler fall weather to plant them in the garden.

Interesting that you plant in pots first. Have you been able to keep thae plants going in FL? How long do they last?

Dee does the same, plants in pots until they get larger. I do Ok with the pots until it's time to overwinter, and then they don't do well, unless I put them down in the ground.

I used a pot over the summer for a different reason--trying to acclimatise a small arilbred iris. I used compost, a sand layer topped with garden soil. Looked great when planted this fall--we will see how it is in the spring.

Crossing fingers and toes. Did you tip it on it's side, or plant it?

When I do pot they do not stay in pots for long, many times it is just because the weather is wrong for them at the present. Remember living in the PNW we have a little rain in the spring...and fall and winter but ahhhhh summer makes up for it all. But would I move back to where I came from, NOT, love it here.

I tipped the pot over, some of the sand layer tipped out, but the rest held. It spent the summer (after it arrived in July) & looked green all the time, unusual for an aril.

Welcome DeeJay, one more addict is always welcome! You know we started with just a couple of iris or daylilies or lilies or any other of the wonderful plants as the commercial bed is first bearded, then seedlings, guest host, test iris, siberians, japanese, spuria, daylilies which is being sold out completely this year, lilies (do not sell those), more seedlings and then the plants for the doorprizes for the club as we give 18 away each month:)

I started out with less than 1/4 acre and now at 3 acres...so addicted oh my yes

Susie I think if you ever had or do grow John you might think different, as for the time it was outstanding but the color of brown was not that nice to look at add to that the fact weeds did not grow as fast as that thing did here.

LOL

Susie,

I can definitely do a swap forum. I would think you would want to build your own site to list your irises, but I'm open to suggestions.

I don't know if there is any limit on how much room we're allowed here.

Susie, sorry I do not have a picture that is on the computer google image or Plant Files. Might sound bad, but reminded me in color of baby poop brown....when ill

Have you tried the species and Spuria as some of those should grow for you in a protected area.

WAAAHHHHHHHH someone please tell me how to use the little icons...do not use them much but once in awhile they help to make a point but I do not know how to get them...

I am working on a write up with pictures that friend has taken and I can use on Hybridizing the Bearded.

D

Polly and I will both be working on a special area.

Dee, you just put your cursor over the one you want to use and the translation of it will appear in your text.
If you choose the wrong one, just backspace & delete it, then choose another. On the preview it will show as text, but when you submit it, the icon will appear.
