We have lots of them , too, Ed! And now that they have started harvesting the beans, the Asian beetles are showing up, as well .
I didn't get much done on the great "peony project", yesterday, but, I had a dose of ambition, today! I got *almost* all the peonies cut back, and "cut back" 4 of the iris beds. It's earlier than I usually cut them, but, with all the leaf spot, there isn't much *leaf* left, anyway I see "Smell the Roses" is blooming , again, but, not a sign of any others . I did notice that while the SDB's aren't as affected by leaf spot as the taller sorts, "Smell The Roses" has NO leaf spot! I have it in several locations, and all have 'clean leaves". Must be pretty resistant !
Yesterday, I DID have an excuse for not cutting peonies . Rita's sister's husband had "given" an older John Deere riding mower, and a self propelled snow blower to our son,,,if he would come haul them away! And, he wanted to go get them, so, we loaded the Massey on the big trailer, drove up, and loaded them up! Both have had very little use....but haven't been run , in years...in fact, they were my brother-in-law's dad's, and they were sitting right where he parked them when he passed away...11 years ago! I'm *guessing* the next thing my son will want, is for *dear ole dad" to get them in running condition
Yesterday I worked on 2 projects. Cleaning up the iris rows, and sowing some peas in my "3 Brothers Garden". Instead of 3 Sisters, there are strawberries, asparagus and peas.
When the sun was on me, I just moved to the other area. It worked out well, so I didn't have to keep the hat on and "be dripping"! It was sunny and no clouds, but we have tall pines that provide moving shade.
Gorgeous weather for the next 10 days. Sunshine and mid 70s in the days, low 50s at night. Slight chance of rain the middle of next week. Still short pants and short sleeve weather for me.
Last Friday was the end of our fiscal year, auditors will be in next week for the first round of snooping. My last year end! I'm starting to get a little excited to retiring. But still lots to do and several things to teach my replacement/upgrade.
I'm going out now to pick all the green tomatoes off the vines. Hope they ripen. It's supposed to be a big freeze tonight. Earlier they said down to 26, but now they say 32. It's always 5 degrees colder out here than in town.
I got the yard mowed yesterday. It felt good to be outside. I picked up tons of sticks and limbs left over from the winds from hurricane Ian. Today I'm a little sore from all the bending over. Geez I'm out of shape!
I pulled a few weeds in my raised iris bed. Many have new growth...Arlyn, Oyez was just starting some growth. A few that have been in there a few years will need divided next year.
The weather is a little cooler. Lots of people wearing long sleeve sweatshirts with their shorts and flipflops. I'm a believer in long sleeves go with long pants. And I never wear flipflops or sandals.
I've heard "we" will be painting our bedroom soon so that "we" can get a new bed. Our current bed is pretty high off the ground and Mrs Red doesn't enjoy climbing into it as much anymore. That makes sense to me.
Anyone attending the HIPS zoom meeting on the 18th talking about how to fill out the Guardian Garden lists? I don't know if lots of new people have joined or if I'm filling mine out wrong. I'm hope to be on there.
You could just cut a bit off the legs of the bed and make it shorter.
Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So, I went to a psychiatrist and told him I've got problems. Every time I go to bed, I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy.
"Just put yourself in my hands for one year," said the psychiatrist. "Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears."
"How much do you charge"
"Eighty dollars per visit," replied the doctor.
"I'll sleep on it and if needed I will come back to you," I said.
Six months later the Psychiatrist met me on the street.
"Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having" he asked.
"Well, eighty bucks a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money! A bartender cured me for $10. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new SUV."
"Is that so!" With a bit of an attitude he said, "and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you"
"He told me to cut the legs off the bed – ain't nobody under there now!
"We" are also moving from queen to king size. Allegedly, one of us tosses and turns more than in years past. Maybe I should wear my fitbit on ankle one night to see if I how many miles i get in while sleeping. That may de-bunk the toss and turn myth.
Rita isn't happy about the height of ours, either...especially after falling out of it, last year! The mattress is WAY thicker than the ones we used to have, and that makes things "taller'. She keeps saying she's going to shop for a "regular" mattress...but hasn't done it yet .
Not sure what's on my plate, today...still lots of things to get "cut back, cleaned up, and ready for winter"....but, I heard the fish are biting , in the river, so....
Had catfish for supper, last night!! I kept one, about 16"-18", so we each had a nice fillet! Before I went fishing, I "transplanted" a chunk of peony to the local cemetery. My sister from Colorado had a stone made, and set, last year, and wanted some of her "favorite" peony , planted next to it. She has an infant son, buried there, and said regardless of where her other kids "end up', she didn't want the "little guy" to be there, by himself, so .
They say rain, this afternoon, and again, tomorrow, so I moved a couple more wheelbarrow loads of wood, inside, this morning. It's sunny, now...and I should be outside doing "something", but, I'm pretty well caught up on cleaning beds...at least until we have a "killer frost".
