Does anyone know where the Royal horticulture Mini color chart can be purchased in the U.S.? I'd like to have the large chart, but I know that it would be out of my price range....Arlyn
Well Polly, I did some checking. Seems they want $41 bucks, US, for the mini chart, and they charge by the "pound", not the pound , to ship!Comes to another$23.76! For the "real" chart, it would be$293.58 and $40 to ship . So I guess I'll continue to describe colors by comparing to a Pepsi can, or a Ducks wing !

Here in England, I borrowed an RHS colour chart from my local Plant Heritage group, and found that it was no good for irises as the colour palate was too limited. I eventually found a reprint of the Ridgeway colour chart on Amazon which only cost a few pounds and has all the subtleties you need for irises. (It is the chart they used back in the 1920s when my irises were being bred, first published in 1912). ISBN1-4212-6188-X(paperback) 2005. Anne
Thank you, Anne! I checked on Amazon, got one coming fo less than $20 . I had checked on Ridgeway's a while back, and came up with a $1500 price tag, but turns out that's an original hardcover! Have you ever stopped to consider how much we know, collectively, on this site!? An amazing source of info! And speaking of site, I really enjoy yours, Anne. Great job , and of course. great iris!....Arlyn
I have used the Azalea Society chart that Dee mentioned, and here is the link. It shows all of the colors and what they are called, but I guess you would have to have accurate monitor color.
That's the root of the problem! We've got 2 computors, and they both show "different", as far as color goes! I'm sure that every monitor, and camera, is just a little different. I guess a person can adjust the color a little on both, but without something to go by, how do you know what's right ?That and the fact that I'm just a little color-blind, makes describing iris sort of hard for me.And, also my descriptive talents are poor as far as color goes--puce, mauve, what the heck are they ? Hopefully with the chart, I'll be a little better....Arlyn
Polly, at the top of the page, if you click on "fan 2" it has a lot of the purple Siberian iris color, and "fan 3" has blues, but it only gives pale purple, vivid purple, etc., not actual color names, but that would really be nice to have. It does have RHS numbers but no names.
Hi, Got my color chart from Amazon today, and I'm very disappointed. It's a black and white photocopy! And a poor one at that! I'm going to return it ,if possible. Not sure if a got a "bum" copy, or if they are all this way.....Arlyn
I emailed a complaint and intention to return, they credited me for the book, and said"keep it"!Gave me an item# to use for a reorder that's supposed to get me a color copy. We'll see! I can't believe a black&white color chart! Whenever I think I've seen it all, tomorrow comes with a new suprise!..Arlyn
Personally, I find that it's a shame that people use so many different colour charts. . . if we could all use the same one, we could know right off the bat what colour someone is talking about just from the colour chart reference. Then there wouldn't be any need to understand what people mean by "puce " (deep red) or "mauve" (shade of medium red-violet, like the flower of the same name).
