I'm planning on continuing with my "Indian themed" iris bed and need some help locating certain cultivars. I'm afraid that most, if not all the ones I'm looking for are in the "gone forever" catagory, but it dosen't hurt to ask!If you grow, or know a source for these, please let me know. "Nez Perce"( Christensen '66),"Nez Perce Chief, and Nez Perce Princess(Smith),"Little Hiawatha"(sdb, Bishop '75), Hiawatha (hartkoph '64), "Githce Gumee"(Bent '41). Jim Hedgecock(Comanche Acres) has named alot of "Indian" iris in the last 30 yrs, or so, and they at least are still fairly available. As are Indian Chief, Indian Hills, Navajo, etc. but many of the "odd "ones are pretty scarce. Thanks....Arlyn

Not to be an enabler, or anything, but if you have some shade, there's a line of hostas with Indian names

http://www.plantsgalore.com/hostas/cultivars/groups/0-Hosta_...

It's nice to have series. I have the American series hostas by Olga Petrysczyn.

Looks like there could be a couple of spellings for Gitche Gumme.

I see Bluebird Haven lists Indian Powow, and several others by Brown. Does it grow well for you, Paul? I've noticed that here, anyway, alot of the dwarfs just "hang on", and don't really seem to prosper. Polly, you ARE an enabler!! But there are only 51 of those Indian hostas, and I DO have some shade....Arlyn

We used to grow 'Apache Warrior' & it does well if you find it. I can look next spring to see if there is any 'Little Hiawatha' left. We gave our big clump to Kevin Vaughn in Oregon this summer.

I know someone who grows Pow Wow. It does "ok", but it is in the shade alot which impacts it I think.

Thanks, Paul. I have a camera dilemna going on. Those photographs -- all of my Iris photos to date -- were taken with my old camera, a Minolta DiMage 5 MegaPixel. It's about ten years old, and last summer it stopped working. I thought it died. In fact, the people at Best Buy checked the camera for me, tested the batteries, etc., and assured me that the camera was done for. So, I bought a Nikon Coolpix 14 MegaPixel, brought it home and tried to like it. Failed. I can't take a decent picture with that camera to save my life. I can't figure that out, because Betty (for instance) takes gorgeous Iris photos with her Coolpix camera.

Then I found out that there's nothing wrong with my Minolta camera -- it was a defective battery that wasn't taking a charge properly that was causing the problem. And my battery charger may be wearing out as well. I kept trying to recharge the battery, finally succeeded, and the camera worked fine.

So now I have two cameras. The old one takes beautiful photographs, but is obsolete and it will be increasingly difficult to purchase batteries, etc. The new one is a jim-dandy camera that many people use successfully -- but my photos from it are crap.

What to do -- what to do. I love taking pictures of my Irises. The ones I took of *Feedback* this Fall (with the Coolpix) were very disappointinng. Sad

I would beg, borrow, buy, steal, whatever, for a start of "Little Hiawatha", Lucy! I can find commercial sources for most of the one's you "guys" have mentioned( which doesn't mean I wouldn't be interested in a swap of some kind!), but "LH" is one I haven't seen! I originally wanted Minnehaha, Hiawatha, Nokomis(all by Farr) and Gitche Gumee to start my bed(because I love the Poem!), but apparently they all are MIA! I laid out an 8'x8' bed to be the "reservation"(already planning a 8'x24' extension!)this last season, but the idea has grown(maybe "festered" is a better word Rolling on the floor laughing )and I decided to add a few more( got about 40 on the list!) not all next season, of course, but over the next few years....Arlyn

I will see if it is there. The club iris sale is in July, but we were the only ones still growing that & will look for any scattered pieces. It grew very nicely for us, but one does need space.
