Hi all,
I posted some spectacular photos of red irises over on the AIS blog today. Thanks to everyone who contributed opinions or images. I had so many to choose from I got overwhelmed!
I especially love to see the garden shots. Rita's Rio Rojo is just fantastic, and I was the happy recipient of some of Brendas Samurai Warrior last year. I need to remember to order Rio Rojo.
Thanks for another great article, Renee. I was one of the lucky people to get a Rio Rojo in Pat & Dee's PNW sale, and Rita's picture has me really excited to see it bloom this spring. One iris you don't mention that I'd be interested to know others' experiences with is Bruneau Jasper. I saw a picture of it and couldn't rest until I got some, but I haven't been able to find anyone who's grown it. It's one of the irises I'm most looking forward to seeing in real life this spring. These things make winter see so long....
I adore Bruneau Jasper, but I did not buy it because I heard it is a poor grower over on Iris Lovers. I have 'Looky Loo' which is similar, and it is a great performer and grower, but it's not as red and not as beautiful. Since I grow my irises in the garden, they have to be pretty tough and put up with too much irrigation and competition from other plants. There's also Zestful Miss, Venetian something-or-other, and the similar ones with some yellow like Phoebe's Frolic and Carnival Ride. I love them all. Red irises keep creeping out of their assigned spot in my garden and invading the candy-colored areas, which are getting smaller.
