Last night my son came over and "raided" my stock of excelsior. He uses it as fuel in his bee smokers, and I save all I get ( and this year it's been a LOT !) Anyway, he grabbed a big handful out of the tote, and threw it in a bucket, said "so long !" and went out the door. He was back in a few minutes and asked, "Why didn't you plant THIS iris?", holding up a dried up little fan ! It was a rhizome of Sambucina, from an order I had received on the 19th ! This vendor has always sent two of each cultivar , and I do remember thinking it was strange that they didn't include an
extra of this one! I threw it in a pail of water and will plant the little fella this morning. The fan still shows some green, and i'm sure that it will be fine, but it sure does make me feel stupid !....Arlyn
