I am in Missouri. Last evening I was talking with my son who lives in the San Jose area of California. He said he was looking at irises in bloom there as we were talking. I know some iris are the earliest of irises to bloom so he could have been referring to some of those earliest varieties. I would like to know at what stage the overview is right now of iris bloom in California. Are they at the earliest, or somewhere further along? Does anyone know? Betty, what is happening in Bakersfield? I think that is where you live. K Katherine |

I only have one iris blooming right now (Green and Gifted: it got faked out by a warm January and February and thought it was spring) but a few people here in Southern California are posting pictures of very early blooming historics here and there. None of my early varieties have begun to bloom yet. My earliest blooms are usually mid to late March: Recurring Dream, Lady Friend, Frequent Flyer, Northwest Progress, Peach Royale, Telepathy, City Lights, Green and Gifted, and Total Recall have all bloomed for me in the last two weeks of March in the past, but reach their peak bloom in April. |

Renee, That does answer my question. I had G & G as my earliest bloomer last season. Gives me a bearing on what is going on. Thank you for responding. I think my son was seeing an historic that blooms early. This would make sense of it. Thank you again, Renee, K Katherine |

My pleasure, Katherine. I hope we all have a great bloom this year! |

I used to live in San Jose, moved 3 years ago up north of San Francisco now. I only started collecting iris recently. I made note of when they started to bloom last year and noticed this year that my first ones, mostly dwarfs so far, are about 2-3 weeks weeks earlier than last year. I attribute it to the mild winter we had and early warmth. I have seen several tall bearded in bloom around town and was down in San Jose a few days ago and saw many there too.
