Hi everyone;
Just curious, how many of you use the AIS iris wiki and do you find that it is an efficient tool?

Well -- I just tried to use it and it was a total failure. I was trying to get a simple alphabetical list of Iris names -- it couldn't give me that but COULD give me a list of the names of Batman's foes. Are you kidding me? Batman's foes???

Not efficient -- not even helpful.

I prefer ATP database. Why one thing is always having to put iris first...that in my opinion is a waste of time. It is not easy to add photo's that is why not many of mine on there, I gave person for another person to add any of mine she wanted to add. I do not have the time or patience to do it all.

I use it extensively, but mostly to look up ones for which I already know the name or for which I want to see all of a specific first letter of a specific type of Iris. Example: used it today to find cultivars starting with the letter X. Cumbersome, though, if not impossible, to use for a general search.

I agree Yes, the more they have tried to "improve" it....the worse it gets....if you don't know the correct spelling, as well as what "class" the iris is listed as (TB, IB, etc.) it's just about useless to gather any info. You get tons of things that just "muddy the water"......there is LOTS of great info there...the trick is FINDING it !

Debra -- that's exactly what I was trying to do -- find Irises whose names began with X. Couldn't find that -- but it offered to find an alphabetical listing of Batman's foes. Still can't get over that.................

Tried to view "Bumblebee Deelite" today using the search box on the wiki. Nothing found. Knowing that the listings leave out the spaces I did another search for "BumblebeeDeelite" and nothing found. Then found it was an MTB and found it under the B portion of the MTB listing, but as Arlyn said I had to know what type it was. There must be better ways to search the wiki.

Trying an internet search was no better as that came up with an SDB named "Bumblebee Delight" that shows up at Holland Bulb Farms and not in the SDB list of the wiki. But searching for "wiki bumblebee deelite mtb irises" had it come up in the wiki, Dave's, Schreiners Gardens, and the Holland SDB of alternate spelling as well as other sites.

I was using it to look up registration info on items I already had, or for looking at pictures of iris I was considering for purchase. I have added some pictures in the past, but it was difficult.

I don't use it, I use the ATP database.

I use iris wiki, but it has really become hard to find things. I also use ATP and Cubits databases. Sometimes I just type iris name in Google and it will link me to ATP, Cubits, or and Dave's garden.

I use the iris encyclopedia, but usually know the classification of the iris I have in mind.

I use it a lot. If I know the iris I want to look for and its class then I get all the information I need there even sometimes including notes from the hybridizer. Its information needs to be updated and someone needs to go in and clean up the photos of irises that are the wrong cultivar but it is very helpful to me. I wish they would require the hybridizer to post at least one photo of their cultivar. I hate going in and trying to decipher ten different words for 'blue' and not being able to see a photo. I use the ATP database also. Another thing I wish both sites would require is the zone the photo was taken in.

It's cumbersome to use, but sometimes it's the only place I can find a picture of a cultivar. I'll usually look at ATP first. But it has been helpful in searching breeding history.. You can usually click on a link to the parent plants and get a picture of them. I like that feature. There's room for improvement there.

Thanks everyone. . . I just wondered what the general consensus was. I have had yet another problem with iris wiki people not only using one of my photos without permission, but putting photo credits to someone else's name on it!

That is bad, Michele. They do need better administration of the site and to be more available for ideas and changes. Next they will be posting your photo to the wrong iris.

We have to remember, though, that (as far as I understand) A) it's all done on a volunteer basis, B) people make mistakes, C) Anyone who is an AIS member SHOULD do their part in correcting some of the "faults"....by contacting the site admins, if nothing else.....so, speaking AS an AIS member...it's not *THIER* problem..it's *OUR* problem, and, so far at least...I've done nothing to help correct anything Crying

I did a lot of work on the iris wiki and sometimes I found mistakes. I had to notify the administrator if I found something wrong, as I wasn't allowed to make any changes. I could add things but couldn't delete anything. You should definitely let them know. I agree

Hi all: Lucy, I did crab at them (yet AGAIN) about the unauthourised use of my photographs. Giving photo credit to someone else was way over the top as far as I am concerned. I have asked that I be addressed excuses for this flagrant misuse but have heard nothing about it, so it will be a letter to the board of directors of the AIS---of which I am NOT a member for very complicated reasons---to which I shall expect some kind of reply. If they are going to spend so damn much money (hosting charges for this wiki thing for last year alone amount to $2,000) on the encyclopedia that they can no longer afford to issue paper certificates for HM and AM winning irises, at least the people running it could excuse themselves for ripping off other people's photos.
