I certainly hope that the board will correct this whole business. Arlyn, I mean acute accents such as é, grave accents such as è, circonflex accents such as â, the cedille ç, the trema ï and so on. All of these are very important in French language names in order to know how to pronounce them correctly. I object to this high-handed removal of accents from my plants' names and I certainly don't understand AT ALL why it was done.

Those in charge didn't know the reason for it?

Michele, sorry, been away from this thread. By all means, use anything I post if you think it is useful. Thumbs up

Hello everyone; Lucy, none of those in charge (sic) of or who work on the iris wiki have ever contacted me after I took the time and trouble to write to that dope Bob Pries complaining about the theft of my photo of Comédie Française and its attribution to another photographer. The previous round of photo theft were those of all my plants and perpetrated by a certain Alain Franco who had no right whatzsoever to use my photos. I hadn't noticed the accent removal until afterwards, at which point in time and having not received the slightest apology, I wrote directly to the AIS president and the board. The reasons why anyone might do such a stupid thing as remove accents from officially registered French language names are rather accessory, but it would be interesting to know. Debra, thanks very much for permission to use your financial breakdown info (I really appreciate that) in further communication with the board of directors concerning the lack of paper award certificates. Will keep you all posted concerning the outcome.

Michele you might consider imbedding a copy write notation along with your name on your pictures. Smiling

Yes, very true that this is a good thing to do systematically, label photos in such a way that there is no doubt to the owner's name---but I was foolish in the past. This is still not an excuse for photo theft or crediting a photo to another photographer. Needless to say, I am not particularly interested in sending photo files to the AIS with registration info!

They warn against doing someone else's photos so I see they think that everyone is following the rules.

Obviously people are not respecting set rules for posting photos on the iris wiki. I've read remarks about how reluctant people are to send photos of newly registered plants and I can understand why!

Many a time people copy my photos, now if it is not for commercial and they have asked I will tell them yes, but to steal it. The few that I have copied from the internet are ones that I have brought and wait to see the same one bloom in my own garden for reference then I delete the owners picture and use mine.

That is why now all my pictures have SPI on them where I think it would be harder to delete it. I hate the copywrite or watermark as sometimes destroys the true beauty of the iris

I still have not received my yellow introduction cards from John Jones and here it is April. Very disappointing

You have to get them in early for the next year, evidently.

I guess what it boils down to is folks not being courteous enough to ASK PERMISSION before they use photos, post them somewhere, share them or whatever. But they don't ask, or very, very rarely. Sign of modern times, I suppose, but asking someone's permission is a rapid sort of thing to do these days, too. I had, however, expected better from a part of the AIS website in terms of asking permission. This business of removing accents from French language names is something I totally fail to understand.

Update: Apparently the board of directors of the AIS is going to discuss the problems I complained about concerning the iris wiki during the board meeting on the occasion of the convention in Portland. I guess I'll believe it when I see some results!

It will be nice to see names as they were meant to be, all marks included. Hope they can get that done, and correct those already mismarked/misnamed.

Yes, I use this site extensively. I always hope for more photo's of the Iris I'm interested in and more information then they seem to provide about the iris, but I do use this site a lot
in addition to the HIPS website Gallery to gain information on the Historics I'm interested in growing.

I am not using the site to the fullest. I may be dense but when I look up an iris and there is no photo I rely on the description of color. When the site uses terms for color like R41, or something like that, it means nothing to me. Without a photo or a description of color I just have to wait until it blooms to find out if it is yellow or purple.
