SPRING BEACON

Suslik has one more bud to open...the high temps the last couple days(mid 80's) shortened up it's bloom time Sad . And my "park noid"....another pumila,is blooming all over the place ! I noticed that, where ever it's planted....sun...shade...under trees...good soil....bad dirt.....they all open at the same time Confused

Arlyn ~ Did you say mid 80's? Wow, we are still in the 50's!

I am really liking Alpine Lake and Blue Doll! Lovey dubby

got this one , as a bonus plant, from Wilde's....they called it "Gold Scarlet" Shrug! . It's obviously "gold"...but I don't see any "Scarlet" Hilarious! . It's obviously not a 'registered" iris, so maybe they either 'lost" the real name, or, perhaps it's just a chance seedling that came up in their beds Confused

Graccus and Rocket! *Blush* Lovey dubby You have a lot of bloom already! I'm still waiting on some of the "littles", and of course the Earl had a wind tattered bloom. I do have some color starting to show on Mariposa Skies so I should be getting more TB's blooming soon.

This will explain what a "sport" is, and when I'm on the other computer, I'll post some pix of the "other" *sports* I grow. I know you have one (I remember , a few years back, someone "shared" their Grandma's iris with you).....and the way mine look.....you could certainly have MORE than one Sticking tongue out

Here are some of the "sports":

This is what is "passed around" as either "Honorabile", or , "Sans Souci"....lots of controversy , and really, nobody knows, for sure Shrug!

Sport Coat...the "latest" sport

I think there *may* be one, or two more, that I've forgotten *Blush* . Anyway , almost all of these were "reclassified" as MTB's, when the AIS re did there classification system, so, you can still find them, sometimes, listed as "TB's". One oddity I have noticed, since I've had them in the same bed......all of them begin bloom on the same day ! Some may open in the morning, and some later, but, the "first" flowers in the clumps all open on the same day !

So I'm still unclear about *sports*. I understand that sports are variations on established cultivars. What I don't understand is: do these sports then become their own cultivar with their own name, etc.? And who makes that decision?

When you say that "Brown's Mutant -- one of it's sports........." -- it is one of whose sports?

Yes -- I have some Irises (flags) given to me by a neighbor. They came from his Mom's yard. How would I know if they're sports vs. hybridized cultivars from long ago? One of them is either Honorabile or San Souci -- I think!! So are both of these considered sports of something else?

Very confusing........ Confused

some 'sports' are recognized by AIS, those which Arlyn has mentioned. I think one, a white from Beverly sills also is a recognized sport.

Yeah, Mary Ann....that "Honorabile / Sans Souci", is considered by*most*, to be a "sport" of the "original Honorabile"....which, as far as anyone knows, "sported itself out of existence". And, as Lucy said, if a person finds a "sport" in their garden....and can propagate it, retaining the "sported features"...they can register it . The sport from Beverly Sills is "Beverly in White", by the way.
And, Brown's Mutant is a sport of Honorabile, as are the others in that post. I'm SURE I'm forgetting at least one other "Honorabile" sport....but, danged if I can put a name to it *Blush* .

Ah -- ok. Now I understand.

So -- I maybe have Honorabile. Or Sans Souci. Or a sport. And I likely have two sports because I also have Kaleidoscope. I've been wondering if those two are related -- they look so much alike!!
