Shrug! I really don't KNOW why, Lucy ?! I always gather my own, from under some ones pine trees, but, I know the nursery I go to sells "bales" of pine needles ( I think they are Sothern Long-Leaf Pine...about 8"-9" long !), and they have a sign next to the stack....and call it 'baled pine straw" Shrug! .
