Yes, I always have the same problem with Alex Stanton. He apparently does this pretty much by himself and has another business too, so he's very slow. I emailed him my order request eleven days ago, and he just got back to me today -- but all was forgiven when he said he could sell me three of Barry Blyth's latest introductions -- possibly one year and probably two years ahead of when Keith Keppel or Joe Ghio might have them for sale! And believe me, I am totally thrilled!!! I don't know if you've discovered Barry Blyth's website yet, but I am getting LORD OF MAYFAIR, FOREIGN SCANDAL, and FLUTTERINA from Alex. Yea!!! I am a big Barry Blyth fan and am totally taken with his irises. His nursery is in Australia, their spring bloom is around late October through December each year, and he posts his new introductions by October 1. So pictures of his 2010-2011 introductions are just weeks away! If you'd like to see his 2009-2010 introductions here is his website:
According to Joe, each year Barry Blyth comes to the U.S. in our spring, and he and Joe Ghio head up to Salem and have a hybridizing fest with Keith Keppel, plus they tour all the nurseries in that area. In 2009 we were lucky enough to run into them at Mid-America, so I got some candid shots of Barry, Joe and Thomas Johnson walking the fields. They didn't have their get-together this year, though, as Joe was having cataract surgery problems plus it was a terrible year for hybridizing.
Anyway, if you're just starting to learn about irises these are names I am sure you will see over and over again. They have all been introducing irises for probably close to 50 years, if not more. I believe Joe said his first introduction was in the early '50's. Amazing, eh?
