|Since you are in CO you will get the correct chilling needed and I have NEVER nicked any seed from iris.
Here is what I do and this is what Keith told me as well, fill pot with good compost/soil, place seeds on top, cover with 1/2 of soil, get some of the finest gravel (like aquarium) gravel and put on top to keep seeds from working up to the top and floating and so the birds and critters are not apt to dig. Put either in a cool dry place, garage, anyplace so the pot will not freeze, check once a month for dampness and watch the babies grow.
I plant mine in Oct or Nov DRY
