i'd say that it is probably NOT an iris borer. More than likely a "fly" larva ,of some kind. The iris borers, when small ,are white, but as they chew their way down the leaf, they get larger, pretty fast. Any I've seen that were actually in the rhizome were nearly an 1" long, or longer, and had started to show a "pink" color . If the "fan' on that rhizome showed no evidence of "chewing", that would be another indicator of some kind of maggot, attracted to the rotting rhizome. My spent rhizomes generally dry up ,instead of rot, but with all the rain you've been getting, rot would be pretty likely. That said, I think I'd give a close check to others in that area, just in case.....Arlyn |
