Hello, Welcome! I am Stormy and I garden under Black Walnuts. This forum is dedicated to helping us grow beautiful gardens despite the ever present Juglone in our soil. Juglone is the substance emitted by Walnut trees that is often fatal to plants. Juglone is also found to a lesser extant in Pecan & Hickory trees.

I've been continually frustrated by the lack of comprehensive lists for Juglone Tolerant and Susceptible plants. The primary goal here will be to enlist the help of all like minded folks in creating such lists. In addition it would be nice it if we could explore suggestions for what to do with all of the leaves and certainly those Nuts!!

Please drop in, introduce yourself and share your nutty experiences with us!

Hi, I'm Diann and I garden under black walnuts, too. I haven't found too many things I couldn't grow under them, tho. They are the perfect tree for growing hosta under because of their tap root, so you have less root competition. I grow, hosta, lily, peony, tree peony, clematis, lily, daylily, bearded iris, Siberian iris, pulmonaria, ligularia, brunaria, tulips, poppies, ferns, dead nettle, astilbe and other stuff that I've probably forgotten.

However, come nut falling time it can be a challenge to weed and not get boinked on the head by a nut. :) LOL

Thanks so much for that great info Diane. I know what a great gardener you are, so I respect your findings. I will add your plants to the plant lists. Thanks so much for stopping in. Please come back again Thumbs up
