I've recently read that Black Walnut trees are just about the most commonly stolen trees. A large felled tree can bring close to $10,000 on the lumber market. It's common practice for thieves to show up as work crews when you are vacationing and completely chop down and remove your precious tree.

Please tell your neighbors when you will be leaving and to keep an eye out for any unauthorized tree trimmers. Sometimes, they bring large crews and your tree will disappear when you are at work. Ask your neighbors to call you at work if they see anyone working on your trees when you are not at home.

I thought your title "Beware of Chain Saws" related to the rumour I heard a couple of years ago that if a person tries to kill a black walnut that the tree goes in to "survival mode" and releases all of its juglone, and nothing, even grass would grow under it for many years.

Does anyone know if this is an old folk story or is it true? The man who told me this had some credibility, but I don't remember what that was.

Thanks - great subject, even if I got it twisted up!!

Your welcome Christine!! As I said to Sherry, Thank you for joining this usually one sided conversation! Big Grin

No, I have never heard of that theory. There certainly could be truth to it. When I have time, I'll try to search around on the web and see if I can find anything about it. Smiling
