La Cucina di Kat: Fried Green Tomatoes

I love tomatoes in all shapes, forms and varieties. Being a northern Gal though, I had never had fried green tomatoes until I lived in the South. Of course the 1991 movie made me curious and it's only recently that I've made them in my own kitchen. Easy, but just so good!

3 Large Green tomatoes

3/4 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs

2 eggs

1/4 cup whole milk or buttermilk

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

Vegetable oil for frying

Wash and slice tomatoes about 1/2 inch thick. Discard the end pieces

Whisk the eggs and milk together. Mix together the flour, bread crumbs and salt and pepper on another plate. Dip the tomatoes into the milk and egg mixture. Pat the tomatoes into the flour - cornmeal - breadcrumb mixture and completely coat.

Add about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil to the bottom of a large skillet and heat over medium heat. Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches of 4 or 5, depending on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the tomatoes, they should not touch each other. When the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side.

Drain on Paper towels to absorb some of the extra oil and Enjoy!!!
