Sorry to hear that the weather in western KY has been so beastly lately. We got a touch of the heat (96) and triple-digit heat index today just east of the Bluegrass region. I saw an interesting website that correlated soil moisture (or lack thereof) with the temperature differences between the west and east sides of the state.

Not so good up here in the northern tip, either. We were supposed to get rain, but all we got today was thunder! I hate dragging the hose around.

Renee, those storms overnight really were scattered. I noticed on my precipitation reporting site this morning that 0.76" of rain fell in Union about the time you posted. Here's the map from the other weather site (showing east-west differences) Thumb of 2010-08-05/sunfarm/770006 that I referred to yesterday.

Well, we finally got about five minutes of rain today, lol. Right afterwards, it was steamy outside, then after that burned off, it actually felt cooler! I hope we do get more rain soon.

I can't believe that with dark clouds and thunder to the north of us in the morning and again to the south of us in the afternoon we didn't get a single drop of rain yesterday. At least the lower humidity should make the days more pleasant through tomorrow.

Still no rain here either. Nothing except a few drops since early June. It's rained all around us, but not here. I have not one single bloom, not even a weed.
Grumble.

It's been such a long time since we've visited, but I've been thinking about all of you. We've had some really rough weather coming through here, and I know some of you were in the line of all the storms. I don't think it's really over yet, but I sure wish it would be.

It's stormed here for most every day of the past 3 weeks, thunderstorms, strong wind, hail, tornadoes and now flooding. My yard is floating. Most of these hit at night, so there hasn't been much sleep around here. Now the problem is that flood water is getting into the water plant and if that happens, there won't be any pumping. We are hoping something can be done, but in the meantime we are collecting buckets of water as well as bottled water.

Tell me how you are and what you've been doing.

Hi Sharon Glad you are safe. We had a tornado hit a few miles from us but no damage here that we know of. Heavy rains all afternoon and into the night yesterday left the yard flooded but sun's out now and water is draining.

Waiting for it to dry up so we can plant our veggie garden. Everytime it's almost dry enough it rains again. DH is building birdhouses for the flower garden and talking about a bird feeder next. I'm trying to decide where to plant two rhododron sprouts and keeping my seedlings alive.

Yes, Sharon, we have had weather in Kentucky recently that has been worth mentioning!
In fact, we had 2.22" of water in the rain gauge this morning at 8AM. We have had about 10.5" officially this month. I say "officially" as I am the co-op observer for the National Weather Service for Estill County; I report daily high, low, and current temperatures as well as precipitation and other significant weather events to the NWS office in Jackson, Kentucky.

I also keep a close eye on the websites that show river elevations, as our farm access is subject to flooding from backwater from the Red River, as we need to know when we may not be able to come and go as we please. The Red came up more quickly overnight than we have ever seen it, so we did not have time to get a vehicle to the town side of our bridge. DD had to row a boat across and be met by one of her employees on the other side so she could get to work with the water about 15" over the bridge deck. DH decided it was a good day to stay home. He had thought about going across with her, but was afraid that if the water does not go down until late tomorrow he would b stuck at work. DD is a vet and has a place to sleep at her clinic. I am fighting a serious illness and didn't really want to be here by myself for that length of time, though our houses are on high ground and comfortable.

Oh, I'm so glad to hear you had sunshine today, Sharon! We did too, for most of the day, then late this afternoon, another storm blew in, and the electricity flickered, but didn't go out.

We had such a beautiful day. I meant to get a photo of all the sandbags the city has gathered to give to those homes in low lying areas. I'll do that tomorrow.

I had to judge a regional art show at KY Dam State Park and just returned. The hotel and convention center are on a hill overlooking the dam, so they are out of immediate danger. But the lake, oh my, it is so overflowing. Water water everywhere!! And it's still rising. I think on Sunday it's supposed to be over the dam, and KY Dam is a hugely tall dam. It's about 4 miles from my house, maybe less.

Scary times.

You all be safe. And check in often so I know you are OK.

Yikes, Sharon, are you in any danger from any overflow from the dam?

I don't think so, KY. But water is everywhere. I'm closer to the river, but think I'm high enough to be considered safe. I'm being watchful...vigilant.

Truth should be everpresent.
We have had strange weather but nothing too violent, There has been worse weather around the county and even just over the mountain from us. They have had hail. We have not. We have had lots of rains but no danger of flooding. The ground is saturated in lots of areas but we are in pretty good shape around our house. What that means is that the soil is sandy clay and come dry times it will be dryer that a powder house because it does not hold water. You take the good with the bad.

Glad everyone is OK.

Sunfarm, so good to see you posting. I always have you on my mind and request prayer for you at church. I sure hope the water does not bother than new bridge deck you guys had put on last year.

Hi neighbors Smiling

I just saw this on recent threads and thought I'd check on everyone.

Glad everyone is safe.

Like you Sharon, it's been a month of gale force winds, rain, storms, tornadoes, you name it.

No sleep at our house either. I hate night storms.

Stay safe everyone!

Thanks Vicki!

It sure is lovely today, though. Sort of making up for the past 3 weeks.
Be safe down there.
