Hello...Welcome to all Kentuckians, whether you've lived here forever, want to live here, moved away and still have roots, or visited and left your heart in Kentucky, we want to know you!

Tell us where you live, used to live, or still dream about in this great state of ours. We'll introduce ourselves here, and in other threads we'll share stories, photos, Kentucky crafts, Kentucky recipes, and all things Kentucky.

But for now, tell us about yourself. Who are you?

My name's Sharon. I am a writer and an artist. I grew up in the Appalachians of southeast Kentucky, and I climbed my side of the mountain searching for wildflowers. That's what I write about, and I've painted a few of them too.

I came from a family of teachers and I was no exception. I taught in Louisville for ten years, then I moved to far western Kentucky, where I lived, raised a family, and taught in the local high school for 27 more years. So I have been east, west and all points in between in this great state of ours. If I stood in my yard and threw a stone all the way straight across Kentucky, it'd probably land in the front yard of the house in the mountains where I grew up. My roots are here and so is my heart.

I have two cats, Jazz and Daisy, and adopted another recently. Her name is Cupcake and she lives in her apartment in my garage. She helps me garden. Jazz and Daisy stay indoors and sleep a lot.

The remnants of my family live in the mountains and in the bluegrass area of central Kentucky. My children live in other states north and south of me. I suspect I'll remain in western Kentucky where I've lived for more than half my life. It's good here, but I do miss my mountains.

So now, welcome to the Kentucky Cubit, please tell us about you!

Hi, My name is Mary, also called Marti. I moved to Somerset Ky from Bakersfield in Kern County, Calif. High desert country. Hot summers, cold winters, but not as cold as Kentucky. I am a Calif breed and born girl, who has live in Utah from age 1 unti 4 years old than back to Cafif til I married in 1965 and moved with my husband to Colorado. We moved there in Oct of 65 and I moved back in June of 66 to Calif. My husband finished up in CO and joined me about 2 months later. I had been working horses and started training horses after we settled back in Calif. And we bought an Arabian colt in hopes of starting an Arabian ranch. Sold the colt when it turned out he wasn't good enough to be a stud and purchased an older stallion that already had some kids out there. In 1978 we were divorced. In 1982 I suffered a back injury in a fall in the yard and had to give up the horses if I wanted to continue to be able to walk for a few more years. I'm still walking but having more trouble now and am not receiving disability payments. I do miss my horses, hiking and camping. But I can still go fishing.

I have one son, now age 41 and a 3 year old grandson. They still live in Ventura, Calif. Thats near the beach. My son sent me a webcam so that I can watch my grandson grow up. Next year they plan a trip to Disneyland, the first for my grandson. My son is working with me to save up money to get me out to Calif for that trip.

I have two cats, Shorty and Ginger. Both recused and my good friends who traveled from Calif with me. I don't have any pictures yet of Shorty to post (he hides everytime he sees me with a camera) but heres a picture of Ginger on the trip out here.
I'm going to shock the neighbors around here when I have this place all in flowers. Around here is GREEN lawns and maybe a rosebush or 2 or they have nandina.
I'm planting Hydrangea, hibiscus, every flower I can get my hand on seeds or plants for adn putting in a shade garden. I NEED COLOR! I NEED FLOWERS! LOTS OF FLOWERS!!!!

Gardening in Kentucky will be a learning time for me. SOOOO. Any information, suggestions or help is appreciated. Greatly appreciated!!

Hi Marti, glad to have you in Kentucky. Your garden just might surprise you! Kentucky gardens have been known to do that.

Ginger looks much like my Jazz cat, i'm glad you have both of them with you.

Thanks for visiting the Kentucky cubit, and I do hope you enjoy your new life in Kentucky. Oh, and fishing is good right there where you live. We had a summer cabin at Lake Cumberland when I was growing up. It's a great place!

Thats what everyone tells me about the fishing here. I've gotten a booklet that shows me all the different fish in Kentucky, I can'l wait to get my license and start catching some of those nice fish. Yummy! Full freezer coming up.

I'm also thinking about getting a hunting license for the first time in many years. My sister has a friend with alot of private property that she only lets invited hunters on it. She says she can get the deer out for me if I get one. I'm looking at rifles right now. Just havn't made up my mind yet.

I don't know a thing about rifles, Marti...just be careful!
Plant yourself a vegetable garden you'd have enough food to get you through next winter with a deer and all the fish.

I just saw the most glorious sunset...thought I'd share it with you.
Looking out my back window....

That is a gorgeous picture!! Thank you so much for that. I still have to learn how to download pictures from my digital camera and my 35 mm when I develop those I'll have them put it on a DVD so I can load it on the computer.

Hi, I'm Polly. I live in NY. And no, not NY, KY. Hannibal, NY. But I think I'm a wannabee Kentuckian. Sharon has been convincing me for years how nice it would be to live where the temperatures are more moderate, and the snowfall measured in inches, if that, rather than feet.

So I'll be watching, and will use any and all info to convince my husband we need to move.

Thank you for joining us. This cubit got a late start, and I'm tweaking it as I go, but it'll start filling up soon enough. I love this state, have lived all the way across it, now I'm wondering if I might just start the journey to make my way back to the mountains. I think I left my heart there.

Join us often, Polly...when the sun starts to shine a little more often, you'll be seeing some luscious wildflowers on these threads.

Good morning! Sitting here trying to get ready for the day and thinking about going back to bed. Didn't get to sleep until after 2 am. Just could not get to sleep.

It was a sleepless night for me too, Marti...but it sure is a beautiful day today! It's already hovering around 50 degrees, and tomorrow it should reach 60. I can see little green shoots of iris peeking up at me. It won't be long now..

I have been to Kentucky, yes, but more going through than staying. I've been in all the states but Hawaii. I just love the mountains. We have the Adirondacks close by. I love them, but it's way too cold and desolate in the winter. Sharon has been painting such a wonderful picture of Kentucky for me. A maybe more laid back life. The mountains I love and a warmer climate.

Before Kentucky I was considering for a retirement home, almost heaven, West Virginia.

But now I'm just trying to get my husband to accept a warmer place, even if it's winters in Florida.

There's beauty to be found all across Kentucky. I grew up in the mountains, lived in the Lexington area and Louisville for about 14 years, then here in western KY for the last half of my life. The landscape is different and I find it is hotter here where I am now. Some of those plants I grew up with just won't grow this far southwest.

I hope you can stay for a longer visit next time, Polly. You have a lot of exploring to do.

Me too, Sharon. Me too. My father worked for the railroad, had a railroad post, but got to ride for free. My husband drove truck at one point in his life, so I went through a lot of places I would like to stay at awhile.

I had trouble with Mountain Laurel for years, but Doug gave me a new one that just might grow. We'll see.
Too hot for trillium....
There are several wildflowers that won't grow for me, those that grew in the mountains and don't tolerate drought.

I grow Mountain Laurel here. I know it likes it cool.
