We are very cold here this morning. Schools were closed yesterday and are on a 2 hour delay today. Not much snow fell but it was very windy. Maybe more on the way for Wed night and Thur.
I did a silly thing, ordered 2 pyramid shaped boxwood for my front porch. Now I am keeping them in the house. The nursery where I got them says they are afraid they will freeze and die. I am determined to save them to plant out in the spring.... You all wish me luck as I spent way too much for them......and still have no porch decorations....

That's about me! I miss Calif until I remember that I was paying $465.00 plus utlities/month for a small one bedroom house in a very bad neighborhood. The neighborhood was the pitbull/drug capital of Kern County. I even had people stop me in the alley behind my house and ask me were they could find the drugs they were looking for. They were very much in the open around there. I was so glad to get out, but miss my friends and their dogs. I used to babysit the dogs for them when they had to be out of town. I also miss my son and grandson who live in Ventura Calif. Thats why I'm saving up money to take a trip back there the end of this coming April. I'll spend a week or so in Bakersfield visiting with my friends and than down to Ventura for my grandson's first trip to Disneyland. I'll return to KY the first week in June with rocks for my rock painting and some plants that I want. Esp white sage that grows in the mts above Ventura.

Native Americans use it in ceremonies. It goes wild in the mts above Ventura and during the winter it goes dormant. So it will be fresh and new growth while I'm there.
There are other things I want to get while there. I know where caster bean plants grow wild also. Thought I might go collect some seeds. I will also be collect Calif Bay leaves and regular sage from out in the desert. If I can find it I'm going to bring back some squaw bush also.

What I miss most in California is the Pacific Ocean and the fresh Bay leaves for stew. There were 3-4 giant Bay trees in the yard surrounding Grandpa's cabin. Do Bay (Laurel) trees grow wild in Kentucky too?

I googled Bay Laurel and found Vintage Gardens says that the Bay Laurel will grow in zones 5-9 and 12-24. Another site said they like mild temp above 25 degrees and can easily be grown in a pot and brought indoors in the winter.

I was wondering. The information I found says you can't let it stay out below 25 degrees. I know where there is a Calif bay tree in the mts and it snows there and it grows well. Its 30+ feet tall. I'm going to check and see if it has any babies around the area. If so ones coming east with me.

Hello all!

My name is Rhonda and I have lived in Kentucky almost all of my life.

All of my father's family are here in Somerset or surrounding areas. My mother's family is scattered throughout Kentucky, IN, and OH. They left KY for work in nearby states as does most who grow up here- or did.

I manage a local used media store and love meeting all kinds of new people and just chatting with them.

I am married to my soul mate - James Koti. His father emigrated here from Yugoslavia in the 50's and his mother was raised in Science Hill. We now live on what was once the family farm. What I love about living here: Looking out my backdoor I see nothing but land and a treeline. No neighbors close by, other than family and that is in the front.

When I am stressed, I sit out back and just relax with nature.

James and I just became parents to 5 week old kittens. We have been having fun all week potty training. I didn't realize kittens weren't born knowing that lol. They are getting better tho, just like real babies we have to remember to take them to the box and give lots of praise.

I have always wanted to try my hand at gardening but...my mother always had a green thumb and could grow anything or revive anything lol. So I guess I have been a bit scared since I havent had her luck with houseplants. But this year...I am going to try container gardening, Marti gave me a great idea about gardening in boxes and I have ample supply to those.

Nice meeting some fellow Kentuckians, ya'll lol

Hi Rhonda, so good to have you here.
I know the Somerset area very well, though I am in the far western tip of KY now, I grew up a little further east of you in Letcher County. We vacationed near you, though, on Lake Cumberland. So I have fond memories of your area.

If you are into plants or are just learning, you'd enjoy the free website All Things Plants: http://allthingsplants.com/

I think just about every plant you can think of is covered in some way on that site. It's full of information too.
Marti is a great one to know as well. She's gardened all across the country.

Welcome to Cubits. You'll have to share pictures of your baby kittens.

Welcome, Rhonda! I never heard of Science Hill. That's an interesting name. Do you happen to know the history behind it?
Congrats on the kittens!

I was thinking about that, Renee, and if I can remember my KY history, long time ago somebody studied the rocks there. Analyzed them scientifically. I think the name came from that study. It's a little tiny town, I think, located in a beautiful area.

Maybe Rhonda knows a better explanation, but I don't think it was named for anybody in particular, only because of the rock study. I don't even really know what kinds of rocks are there, but it's in the foothills of the mountains.

Residents don't like to hear me say it lol but I oft say that Science Hill is just a suburb of Somerset. My hubby says the name itself was chosen by the first postmaster, William Gragg and that the town itself was named in honor of a scientist who spent time here analyzing the rocks ect.

Most of this area of Kentucky is built on top of deep underground caves, limestone and shale and some caves still have saltpeter in them as well.

How interesting! Are any of the caves open to the public? I enjoyed Mammoth Cave.

Most of the caves I know of are on private land. One of my friends has a cave that was used during the Civil War as a place to both house prisoners of the Northern Aggression (North) lol and also mine saltpeter. Before that, it was used by Native Americans, they believe going by the arrowheads and such found in it.
