There are 399 lakes in Kentucky, most are fishing lakes. Considering there are 120 counties, I'd say 399 lakes is a lot of water .

Here is a site filled with lake information:

Truth should be everpresent.
That sunset is beautiful. We have Paintsville Lake, Dewey Lake, Yatesville Lake and Fish Trap Lake all pretty close. I'll try to get some pics in the Spring and summer. We've also got some really pretty creeks and rivers here.

I grew up on the north fork of the Kentucky River...oh yes, I know about the creeks and rivers there. I can't wait for your pictures.

Morning Ladies!! I got to go to Campbellsville yesterday. We went down for a plant rescue mission and than stopped for a picnic lunch at Green River Lake. It was such a nice day and so beautiful at the lake. At Green River Marina I got the chance to see some of those house boats up close. Would love to have seen inside. I saw one there that is as big as the trailer I live in. Plus they have house boats and floating cabins for rent. Might be fun this summer to rent on on the cabins. Fish right off the front porch.
I"m going to check into the cost and also of a weekend on a houseboat for a fishing trip at one of the lakes around here.

So saw somemore country here in KY and really want to see more. I took some pictures but the digital camera was full so had to use the 35 mm. Will have to wait to post pictures.

Marti, you really need that live-aboard boating experience, at least for some summer weekends. We spent many years on our houseboat while the kids were growing up. We had no relatives anywhere near us, so those friends we boated with became our extended family. Our marina was within 10 miles of our home, so while the kids and I were out of school, all summer every summer, we lived on the boat and my husband drove to and from work from there. We toured every little cove on the lakes, and also traveled the rivers quite often. The best part was 'fishing right off our front porch' then having a fish fry right off the front porch too and inviting other boating friends to join in.

Well, in the case of this houseboat, the grill was on the 'back porch'. This photo is sometime in the early '90's traveling the Cumberland River on our way to the Ohio River, actually not far from home. When we got to the Ohio, if we turned right we could go to Golconda, Illinois or on to Louisville, but if we turned left we would hit the Mississippi and could go on to the Great Lakes. From here, we could go just about everywhere by water. You almost can't live this close to two huge lakes and not have some kind of boat, and any kind was great.

Those were fun years, and I miss our houseboat, lots of good family/friend time spent on it. I hope you get to enjoy the lakes in your area too. And the fishing.

Took a picture up at Green River Lake. Learning how to use the digital camera my son sent me. Just have to learn how to down load to the computer. My friend put the pictures on a dvd for me for now.

Hi Gloria,

Then welcome to KY!! Dale Hollow Lake is pretty far from me, but I've been there. Too bad you aren't coming to Lake Barkley or KY Lake, I know them pretty well and live very close to both.

You'll have a great time, and September is a great month choice. Maybe somebody who is from that area will be reading and can give you more info before the time comes.

I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Be careful with the boat.....sometimes it gets crazy on the lakes. We had a houseboat for many years....it was hard for me to remember that boats have no brakes!!

Where will the lake level at Cumberland be this summer? I presume it is still down because of repairs to the dam. That is a real scary situation, as they thought they had it fixed in the '70s but the leaking started again a few years ago. I remember going on an engineers' tour in about 1980 that explained how the initial repairs were done--basically drilling vertically into the dam from the top and filling the holes with concrete, then excavating between the filled holes in a "bowtie" shape to fill in the spaces to make a cutoff wall all the way across. Basically the built a dam within a dam. Quite a project! I think they are doing something similar this time, but haven't followed it too closely.

It's been so many years since I've been to Dale Hollow, I'm not sure I could find it again without a map. But I am sure you will have a good time, and you'll have to report back to us with words and photos. Looking forward to that!
