The blackberries are blooming. I am looking forward to some treats myself. Nina's cake sounds like a sweet treat as a well as a sweet memory. Thanks for sharing them both.
It's getting close to that time, isn't it? Blackberry cobbler is my absolute favorite and I haven't had that in such a long time. Happy Summer, Cheryl, take good care of my mountains.
It's dry here as well, the rain that moved in last night came north of us and moved your way. I don't think we got a single drop. Upper 80s again today. And humid. Terrible humidity.
No rain here either, though it looked on one weather map like it was mostly in Southern Kentucky and if that's so, then it will have missed both of us.
I really got too hot working outside today, but I think it was all that humidity.

Looks like we will be dry for the next three or four days so I will have to water the garden. That is the only time I am glad I only have a small space to garden. LOL
I am also glad my rain barrels filled up. Do you have any veggies this year?
Hi Cheryl,
No, no veggies but lots of herbs. My neighbor grows tons of tomatoes and we have a great farmer's market in Paducah, only a few miles away, plus I have a friend who is an organic farmer just across the river in Livingston County. Seems that with only me to cook for, it's just much easier to depend on the markets. As I get older, it's getting so much harder to do all that gardening. This is the first year I haven't had tomatoes and peppers, so I might regret this decision. I might even decide to pick up some tomato plants at Lowes tomorrow, because it feels weird to not have them. So you just never know. I've been known to change my mind and I still have time to do that.
There are no chipmunks here . .. much to my surprise. No rocky cliffs for them to live or hide in. But squirrels, big fat squirrels . . . now they are the bane of my existence. They'll grab a tomato off the vine and come up to the window to make sure I see them eating it. If it weren't for the hot sun here I swear I'd chop down all these trees they live in.
I have so many trees . . most of them I planted over the past 40 years .. . . the squirrels don't even have to touch the ground, they can travel miles from tree to tree, except when they come down for my tomatoes.

I had that problem in Louisiana. We shot them and made gravy on them. Delicious!!
We got rain again today but nothing like they are getting back home. Poppa said he could swim in the front yard and my brother said his garden was down in the river. They got 5" today. South of them got 13". Rain like that would wash down to the flatlands. LOL
We haven't had much rain either, but got a hard and heavy 10 minute downpour yesterday. Might have been about a half inch. I'll take what I can get though.
How's your dad doing? I know you miss your mom so much.Your brother does live close to your dad, doesn't he? That helps a little, but I also know how much you'd like to go home. How are your little guys doing? Are they there for the summer yet or are they coming this year?
I hope you and Steve are doing well. You've had a bunch of hard times and I can't help but admire your strength. And for years, you've been in my prayers. My friend who takes good care of my mountains.

You are so kind and I appreciate your prayers so much. We are doing pretty well and it is a nice change. Steve's health is much better and we are thankful. I am getting weaker but still doing okay.
The boys are not here yet. Radar will be coming the second week of June. His momma is bringing him and she will be staying a week so we can have some time with the baby. She is growing so fast. Knock will be coming a couple weeks later with Steve's momma, brother and sister. They will be staying for a week. We are really looking forward to it.
We are supposed to get rain tomorrow. We need it.
My Poppa is doing well. My brother lives a few miles away but my son and daughter in law live next door. They always check on him and cook for him. Amanda takes him shopping and Radar spends the night with him pretty often. Steve's folks live a couple miles from him and check on him often. They invite him to eat and pick him up for church. But I do miss home and family. It is hard.
I know it must be hard, but there will be a way someday when you will be where your heart already is. I'm so glad your boys will be there soon, and it will be great to spend time with the rest of the family. I'm also glad that your Poppa is being well cared for.
We are having so much rain yesterday and again today and the storms are fierce. Maybe they'll move your way this week.

The rain has been awful back home. 13" in some spots in just one day. Poppa said he could swim in his yard and my brother said his garden was down in the river now. That kind of rain would wash us away here in the mountains.
