When you are walking past a cliff overhang in spring, look up and you might be able to see the mayapple sort of hanging over the cliff. Seems to me they grew along cliff edges a lot. They do better when they have a little bit of shade. And they look a little like a schefflera (how in heck do you spell that word?) with their umbrella leaf pattern. The leaves are not as thick and glossy, though.
