Ned says:
A pocket full of plastic knives while weeding helps mark new seedlings so they don't get pulled up.

Weeds come out of the ground better just after a good rain.

Norm says:
Broken pots make great toad homes.
During the heat of the summer put a small tray inside with some water.
Toads absorb water by sitting in it.

Shallow dishes of water in the garden are a toads friend.
They absorb moisture through their skin and love to sit in the water when it is hot and dry.

toads do not share well so several dishes are a good thing.Thumb of 2010-10-14/gardengus/c9fb80

be very careful when doing fall cleanup / these are praying mantis egg cases ((a good thing))
leave them in the garden, if they are too close to each other move them to another part of the garden.
The newly hatched babies will eat each other and each case has several babies.
With enough protein she can lay more than one egg case.

Ned says:
now is the time to gather hedge apples (don't eat them and they make really bad cider Smiling ask Norm about that)
They are good to put in your potting shed , house or garage to keep spiders away. they work better if cut in half but last longer if left whole.

This is a common milkweed
Weeds have a lot to offer the local garden inhabitants
This weed is host to the monarch butterfly
The nectar feeds many
The fluff is great for the birds
Collect it in the fall and in the spring put it out for nesting material.

The baskets used for suit are great nesting material holders in the spring

Norm says;
Don't waste a good Christmas tree
It makes a wonderful place for the birds to sit on cold days and a great feeder too.
Coat pine cones with peanut butter and roll in seeds, toss or tie them in the tree.
Scatter dried bread crumbs in the branches.
String popcorn on the tree,or just toss it , the branches will catch it, and the birds will love it.

If you don't feed the birds , cut the branches and lay over the perennial bed.
It is a good cover and prevents heaving from the spring freeze and thaw.
In the spring use the needles to mulch acid loving plants such as Blueberries or azaleas.

Chamomile Tea is good for more than just drinking.
Use it to spray or water seedlings to keep them from damping off.

Life in the Garden

A place to see the ever changing life in the gardens I tend. My garden can be a wild and weedy place. There is always something going on. Just take a look around.
