Dear Deb, this is totally true. There is a Gentleman who comes in our pub and he would go missing for six months at a time, then come back for awhile and go missing again. He was a Lighthouse Keeper off the Sussex coast, in one of the last manual ones as they are all computerized now over here in England. He came in the pub with a very somber face one day and as he knows my father he came and sat with us. My father asked what was wrong as he seemed very upset and he told us he had got the sack. We naturally assumed it was because they were automating them all, to save money. It wasn't that at all, evidently a ship had reported that the Lighthouse was not functioning so they tried to contact him via Radio and could get no answer. Fearing the worst they launched a Lifeboat and when they got there they found him slumped over Drunk! So he was prosecuted for it as it is a serious maritime offense and he lost his job.
It has always made me laugh as I wonder what you would put on your C.V. Reason for leaving last job - Drunk in charge of a Lighthouse.
I know it is a serious matter, but I look back now all them years ago and have to have a laugh at it.
Kindest Regards from England.
