YES! We have our first caterpillars of the season in the garden already. There are around a half dozen Black Swallowtail cats in their second instars.

Many people ask me how they got there... did I buy them or what?

They came to the garden on their own...

The butterflies instinctively seek and find their larval host and deposit their eggs right onto the plants. After a few days the eggs hatch and the cats begin to eat and grow. These small ones were observed today dining on Common Rue, Dill, and Bronze Fennel.

The Native Pipevines are coming up great too. I was able to procure about a dozen roots for Aristolochia serpentaria. They were donated by Rod Angeroth of Loess Roots. We have 6 of these vines growing in the shady area by the windows of the Art Room in the Lisa Veitenheimer Memorial Garden... This plant is host for the beautifully striking Pipevine Swallowtail.
